I picked five movie-related sites and rolled a “film noir” search for various actors and actresses. It worked properly, but I don’t think I selected enough sites for this particular example to be of any help. It’s a search option that I will defiinitely keep in mind whenever I’m dealing with esoterica on the reference desk.

Here’s one of my searches:

My test catalog:

Kind of cool to play around with, but I don’t think it’s something I’ll use. I already have a small network of people who share my interests, and I don’t have much of interest in broadcasting that sort of thing to others. Still though–I suppose many of us PLCMC’rs would like to have our very own private collection “cataloged”. It’s a nice interface and fairly intuitive. When I clicked on the recommendations (based on my existing 5-book list), they were usually spot on. I actually already own several of the recommended titles. So yeah–cool toy but not for me.

RSS feeds…

The bloglines account is pretty sweet. There are only a handful of blogs that I normally check each week, but it’s convenient to have them all “delivered”, so to speak. The search tools were pretty accurate, but I’m pretty much sold on a few things that I’ve been keeping up with for years. I did find a couple of cool classic cinema blogs though, and a friend of mine has been harrassing me to subscribe to HIS rss feed for months. He was stoked that I finally made the effort–less stoked when I told him it was for my work. Sorry pal.

I would make my feeds public. There’s nothing too weird in there, but it is mundane. I don’t want to torture my coworkers.

It’s a segment called “Silent Library” and it appears on a popular Japanese television show. This has actually spawned a few imitations in other countries. Get your incident report forms (and digital cameras) ready.

Just sayin’.

Joomla?

Anyone tried Joomla? It’s an open-source content management package. I’m still not sure how it works. It claims to offer all sorts of extras for its end users, but for all I know it could be Frontpage on ‘roids. A friend of mine is redesigning his small business website via their software.

Americans waste way too much time taking photos of their jaded pets.

I am not absolved from this practice:

Ok. This is just to meet the requirement of the Web 2.0 exercise (I uploaded this image via Flickr). Better Spencer’s photo than mine…

I created this blog last week but decided not to post anything. The assumption was that I would think of something clever to say over the weekend–something that would endear me to my PLCMC colleagues. I failed.

Btw, I already had an old blog at blogger.com, and decided to go with wordpress for this library project. Hopefully it isn’t breaking any rules.

Anyway, feel free to check back regularly for more inane updates!
